If c1 would lead to overexposure, I'd switch to c2:Ĭ2: Shutter priority, 1/20 second exposure, 1600 ISO - I consider this the "second-tier" set-up, for scenes that are still dark/dim, but where the camera can use a smaller aperture without underexposing at 1/20 second. Here's what I configured for my night shots:Ĭ1: Manual, f3.5, 1/20 second exposure, 1600 ISO - I consider this the "limit" configuration, for the darkest scenes where the camera would otherwise force a slower exposure even with a wide open aperture, leading to blurry images. I figured the best way to get the camera ready for good, steady night shots was to set up the custom shooting modes. I plan on shooting in RAW and editing in Lightroom. I'll be going to Europe for about 2 months in a few weeks, and I want to make sure I'm prepared to take great night shots while there.

After years of using crappy point and shoots, I picked up a used Canon 40D, along with a standard 18-55mm lens, from a friend for a good price.
